TWU has asked American's parent company AMR Corp for details on how it arrived at the cost-savings targets it unveiled this month when it said it planned to eliminate 13,000 jobs and terminate pensions.

This week the TWU Negotiating Team methodically scrutinized the company’s reorganization plan and spent much of each day analyzing company financial data and spread sheet comparisons. Individual work groups began drafting their questions for the company and presented some to them on Thursday afternoon. Others will follow into next week.

The questions passed to AMR will initialize them to begin answering, in detail, thus providing TWU negotiators an opportunity to look deeper into their financial methodologies and how AMR arrived at their numbers. This will help direct the unions drafting of counter proposals.

The TWU Negotiating Committee met today to continue the arduous task of reviewing the company’s business plan proposals. This is the next step in the 1113 process.

After a short presentation by AMR, regarding Active/Retiree medical benefits, the Negotiating Committee began drafting specific questions for the company, based on their projected cost savings per the 1113 term sheets received last Wednesday.

A fully fledged costing out of AMRs business plan outlined in the term sheets is under way. The committee is leaving nothing to chance and will ensure that everything “asked” for by the company is evaluated to its fullest, and reviewed by our legal and financial advisors before considering our counter proposals.

This week’s schedule is very busy; we will keep you posted as we progress through this phase of the 1113 process. An informational “town hall” call-in is the works, details to follow.

News takes on deeper meaning when you put a human face on the statistics. Here's Ben Stein: A few days ago when I opened the newspaper the news was so strange that it made my head spin. There was so much spectacular randomly-acquired wealth and so much misery right next to each other that I couldn't fit it all into my brain.

First there are the stories of how much money will be made by people with even the slightest connection with Facebook when it goes public soon. A man who painted murals on the walls of its headquarters will make hundreds of millions. Clerks and programmers will make tens of millions. Early and small investors will make millions and millions - wealth beyond imagining.

For years, American Airlines bucked the industry trend of sending maintenance work overseas.

But that may soon end with the announcement last week that American plans to close its Alliance Fort Worth maintenance base and outsource the work performed on wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 767 and 777.

AE BANKRUPTCY UPDATE

Brothers and Sisters,

On Wednesday Feb. 1, AMR announced their restructuring plan, a plan that deals a heavy blow to nearly 9,000 TWU members working at American Airlines.
