American Airlines wants to terminate the pensions of 130,000 workers as part of its bankruptcy proceeding. The move would be good for the company's balance sheet, but would it be good for America?

American's pension termination would be the largest in U.S. history. The airline wants to end the plans and turn them over to the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp (PBGC), a government-sponsored agency that insures most private-sector defined-benefit pensions through premiums paid by plan sponsors.

Late Friday AA presented its rationale for rejecting TWU’s proposal for an early out proposal.  The Company asserts that the program as designed is too costly.  However, AA indicated that it would still review such concepts during the entire 1113 process.

An early out program is essential for this reorganization and as such your TWU bargaining team will be pushing the matter throughout the negotiations.  We consider such a mechanism to be very important in these difficult negotiations.

TWU Negotiating Committee

This week TWU Negotiators started passing first round counter proposals to the company after hours of relentless study, some of it over the past two weekends. All seven work groups drafted proposals for their respective units, responding to AMRs ask of $390 million dollars in cost savings from TWU represented workers.

The Negotiations Committee wants members to know that we are entrenched in 1113 bankruptcy negotiations, which are by bankruptcy law – concessionary - and not an easy task for any one of your leaders, and of course it is not easy for anyone of you.

TWU Negotiators reconvened this afternoon at AMRs Flagship University. All represented work groups met with the company as they presented their analysis of cost outs covering the TWU pensions, medical coverage options, and sick time and retiree medical costs savings. The TWU Benefits Committee attended the presentation at the request of the Negotiating Committee. The company held a brief Q and A session immediately following their presentation.

This week has been a whirlwind of meetings, presentations, discussion and activities for TWU negotiators and members.

Monday evening TWU International President James C. Little and Air Transport Division Director Garry Drummond hosted a telephonic town hall reporting on the AMR bankruptcy. Members submitted questions via email prior to the call and International President Little answered as many as possible during the limited time frame. The call was well received by members and there are tentative plans to hold another in the near future.

Saving money is not cheap, as one consulting contract for American Airlines and AMR is proving.

Boston Consulting Group has been helping new AMR/American Airlines chairman and chief executive officer Tom Horton reorganize the management structure at the air carrier.

On Thursday, AMR filed a motion seeking approval of the arrangement, with a "not-to-exceed" price tag of $11,732,000 for Boston Consulting's fees.
