Maintenance and Related and Stores Workers Achieve Improvements from Previous Offers

Dallas – Members of the Transport Workers Union at American Airlines have reached new tentative agreements with the company for workers in the Maintenance and Related (M&R) and Stores bargaining units, the union said today.

“Our strategy to keep all of our options open and fight for fairness for all of our members is working,” said TWU International President James C. Little. “These two new agreements represent an improvement from the company’s previous offers and its motion to void our contracts pending before U.S. Bankruptcy Court. We will now present these tentative agreements to our membership for their final decision.”

Five Units That Had Accepted Offers From American Airlines in May Negotiate Additional Improvements for Ground Workers Including More Pay, Improved Medical and Retirement Benefits

Dallas ‒ Negotiators for five Transport Workers Union bargaining units, representing American Airlines’ Fleet Service Clerks, Dispatchers, Ground School Instructors, Maintenance Control Technicians, and Simulator Technicians reached agreement today with AMR for improvements in wages, medical benefits and pension contributions as required by their labor contracts.

TWU’s Lawyers Continue to Argue on Behalf of All Members in NYC Bankruptcy Court Today While Union Leadership Promotes Merger with US Airways as Best Option for American Airlines, its Customers, and Employees

NEW YORK – Election results were released this morning for seven separate work groups at American Airlines represented by the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU). Five bargaining units, representing Fleet Service Clerks, Dispatchers, Ground School Instructors, Maintenance Control Technicians, and Simulator Technicians voted “Yes” -- meanwhile Aircraft Maintenance and Related workers along with Stores Clerks voted to reject the terms in the company’s last offer. Each bargaining unit's vote is binding on the workers in that specific contract group.

TWU Joins with other Unions at American Airlines in Advertising Campaign Urging the AMR Board of Directors to Support a Merger with US Airways

The Transport Workers Union of America has joined with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants and the Airline Pilots Association on an open letter to the AMR Board of Directors in support of a merger with US Airways. The letter will be featured in full-page advertisements in the Friday, May 4 editions of The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Advertisements also will be run in business publications such as the Wall Street Journal.

Hundreds of Workers to March and Rally to Save Jobs at American Airlines and American Eagle as Hearings to Void Labor Contracts Begin at U.S. Bankruptcy Court Morning of April 23 in Lower Manhattan

New York  – Workers from American Airlines and American Eagle will march and rally from New York City’s Battery Park to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Bowling Green on Monday, April 23rd.   

Backed by the New York City Central Labor Council and Jobs with Justice, workers will rally to protect thousands of American jobs that are at risk, as part of AMR Corp.’s demand to tear up labor contracts at American Airlines and American Eagle.

Earlier today, I spoke with AMR Senior Vice President Jeff Brundage and told him privately the very same thing we’ve been saying publicly. TWU is committed to doing all we can to reach a consensual agreement regarding our labor contracts at American Airlines.

We have always been prepared to fight for our members --- either by reaching an agreement or going to court. We are prepared for either eventuality.   While we would prefer a consensual deal with AMR, our lawyers also are preparing to defend our members and their families before the judge.

We’re cautiously optimistic about the plan we saw today for American Eagle, because it presents a viable path for a sustainable business going forward.  That’s different from what we saw at American Airlines.  American Eagle is moving on two tracks, either to remain a unit of AMR, or to become an independent and competitive company.  That’s a good sign.

Ft. Worth, Texas — On Wed., Mar. 21, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) will brief the media on AMR’s business plan and changes to working conditions affecting TWU workers at American Eagle. The union also will discuss next steps in the bankruptcy process and actions TWU intends to pursue. The briefing will follow meetings earlier in the day between TWU and managers representing American Eagle and follow-up meetings with TWU leaders and the union’s bankruptcy advisors.
